I learned from one of my English professors in college that when working on a poem, short story, novel, etc., It is best to set the work aside for a bit and revisit it with new & fresh eyes sometime later. And thus with this poem that is exactly what i have done... this work is something that i wrote a few years ago...forced as it was for an assignment, but today i have taking a stab at revising my work - & the following is what i have come up with;

“Firefly”

A heavy heart,
Carefully carved from a glacier.
From the start,
My demise was fated--
It’s like my destiny has already been slated.

I have been sucked in
And spit out.
Like the venom of a deadly serpent.
As if,
To try and restore
The ability to live and my interest in living,
But fate can never change true feelings.

Now my eyes bleed blue,
And I can’t help but feel as if,
I am sinking like a brick--
into a dark and blue abyss,
Drowning.

And here comes this bell jar, once again.
And Trapped inside am I-- like a helpless firefly,
I live behind a lie.
Inside this glass, for everyone to see.
And no one in this world will ever know who I truly am,
But me.
